Abstract
O presente estudo analisa a situação dos cinco Estados que compõem o Mercosul no tocante ao Direito do Mar, em especial, sobre a possibilidade de expansão da plataforma continental além dos limites iniciais das 200 milhas marítimas e a contrapartida financeira destinadas aos Estados em desenvolvimento decorrente do aproveitamento dos recursos não-vivos dessa parte do mar. Primeiramente, o trabalho apresenta a formação da Convenção das Nações Unidas sobre o Direito do Mar (CNUDM). Na continuação examina o conceito jurídico de plataforma continental, plataforma continental estendida e a aplicação de royalty internacional sobre esta área. Na parte final, destaca os interesses dos cinco membros do Mercosul quanto a esses pontos anteriormente examinados, salientando posições convergentes e divergentes entre eles.
